Contrasting wolf responses to different paved roads and traffic volume levels

چکیده

Abstract In some regions of the world, large carnivores, such as wolves, persist in landscapes with dense networks paved roads. However, beyond general impacts roads on wildlife, we still lack information carnivore responses to different types and traffic volume levels. Using wolves NW Spain a case study, show how respond differently road classes depending size, speed limit volume. All evaluated (25 GPS collared wolves) crossed Overall, during 3,915 sampling days, recorded 29,859 wolf crossings. Wolf crossings all were at mean rate 0.022 crossings/day/km (95% CI 0.016–0.027). Wolves low more frequently, often night, order lessen chances encountering traffic. We found mortality be highest high How interact should considered landscape planning strategies guarantee long-term persistence human-dominated landscapes. our case, results support an increasing focus primary (class II) identify segments these where mitigation efforts prioritised. Our study also highlights importance considering when studying impact wildlife.

Modifying PIARC’s Linear Model of Accident Severity Index to Identify Roads' Accident Prone Spots to Rehabilitate Pavements Considering Nonlinear Effects of the Traffic Volume

Pavement rehabilitation could affect the accident severity index (ASI) since restoration measures means more safety for road users. No research or project has been carried out to identify hazard points to build a linear model based on crash severity index. One of the very popular accident severity index models used in all countries is based on linear models to rehabilitate pavements and this pa...

Behavioral Responses of Northern Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens) to Roads and Traffic: Implications for Population Persistence

A key goal in road ecology is to determine which species are most vulnerable to the negative effects of roads on population persistence. Theory suggests that species that avoid roads are less likely to be negatively affected by roads than those that do not avoid roads. The goal of this study was to take a step toward testing this prediction by evaluating the behavioral response to roads and tra...

Roads to the development of improved pertussis vaccines paved by immunology

Current acellular pertussis vaccines have various shortcomings, which may contribute to their suboptimal efficacy and waning immunity in vaccinated populations. This calls for the development of new pertussis vaccines capable of inducing long-lived protective immunity. Immunization with whole cell pertussis vaccines and natural infection with Bordetella pertussis induce distinct and more protec...
